Leading change through your work

New resources for becoming a different kind of leader

What’s love? It should be about us, it should be about trust

When I ask people why they left corporate and won’t return, the themes I hear center around two things: trust and fairness.

They no longer trust that an employer will take care of them or follow through on verbal commitments and written policies, let alone a brand promise. They’ve worked across companies for a string of unsupportive or even obstructive managers. They’ve experienced executive leaders who haven’t taken ownership of their hiring process, performance reviews, policies, compensation, and management practices. They can’t trust these executives to define, apply, and maintain fairness.

So, we don’t want to go back. We want to build something new, better, different. We have to answer this challenge:

 If not that, what?

How do you design a different kind of organization? What should your policies be? How should you hire? How will you change your business so you can become financially sustainable?

Most importantly, how do you evaluate your own leadership and decision processes to become more fair and trusted?

On February 6, there’s a book coming out that will help us answer these questions.. It’s called INDIVISIBLE: How to Forge our Differences into a Better Future, by speaker and trainer Denise Hamilton.

INDIVISIBLE translates the potentially charged word “inclusivity” into relatable language and easy-to-understand examples. In each chapter, Denise recounts personal stories about overcoming others’ biases, as well as some of her own, and her journey toward the higher goal of “indivisibility.” She provides self-examination questions, intentional action steps, and motivational journal prompts.

The book includes a step-by-step toolkit to start enacting “indivisibility” on the job, where we spend so much time figuring out how to collaborate effectively.

Until now, Denise’s workshops have mostly been available to employees at large companies. But from next week, you can get her book and explore INDIVISIBLE’s questions for yourself.

I had the pleasure of working with Denise as a client in 2022, when this book was just a concept. Congratulations to Denise and her team for bringing this book into the world!

More client goodness! Congrats to our former clients Lacey Schwarz Delgado and Mehret Mandefro of Truth Aid Media on the recent premiere of their documentary, The Cost of Inheritance, on PBS’s America Reframed series. The film explores the complex issue of reparations in America from the perspective of several families. Stream for free from your local PBS station or on YouTube.

Succession, the other podcast. I’m the designated executor for a couple of family members. While I hope that responsibility is far in the future, I got tons of tips from former client and legacy specialist Rachel Donnelly of Afterlight about how to set up my digital life now, just in case someone needs to take over in an emergency. Rachel’s stories will motivate you to whip your estate plan into shape and convince your parents to please, please clean out those mystery drawers and closets. (If you dare, ask her what she’s found in the closets of Southern octogenarians.) Listen to “I’m an Executor…Now What?” on YouTube or wherever you get podcasts.

Accessible menopause advice. As a woman experiencing perimenopause symptoms, you may not have access to a doctor who takes you seriously. Consider attending this upcoming virtual seminar on nutrition, exercise, and wellness with my friend Jaiden Cole-Miskel, a doctor and professor of nutrition, on February 10. Learn how you can treat symptoms and benefit your long-term health, including decreasing your likelihood of osteoporosis, degenerative diseases, and even colon cancer. Make 90 minutes and spend the $15 to join this session. Register here or find more information here.

New email requirements. Google and Yahoo are getting serious about spoofs and spam. That might impact whether your emails reach your leads and opted-in list. If you use an email service or CRM, validate your domain today, February 1. If you haven’t made your updates yet, follow these three compliance steps.
